Best Brooke Bond Card Software EVER!
Where it all Began - What it does - What it looks like - What is needed to run
it
In
the beginning.......
As a collector of Brooke Bond PG Tips Tea Cards, I decided one afternoon to put
my collection in order.
So..... I sat down with my pen and paper and a few thousand tea cards.
Looking vacantly into space, trying to
decide where to begin, my mind started wandering.
It occurred to me that once I'd written out a list of the cards that I owned,
and worked out which ones I needed, I would be left with a single, messy, copy
of blotchy paper that would need re-writing once any changes transpired (such
as the acquisition of one of those many much needed sets).
I therefore decide to computerise
it. I started off tapping a few details into a word processor.
After about 30 minutes, I realised I needed to re-sort my list of cards and
sets.
Unfortunately word processors aren't always the ideal choice to perform tasks
such as sorting data.
What I needed was a spreadsheet, or so
I thought,
I copied the information over to a spreadsheet and started to reformat it.
Again, another half hour or so had passed and I still wasn't happy with what I
had achieved so-far.
I sat for a few minutes more scratching my head, physically as well as
metaphorically as I had an itch.
Anyway.... I realised that the functionality I wanted would only be available
in a database.
So I had a look through some old tea
card publications, but could find nothing.
I did a search of the Internet but still drew blanks.
After making myself a nice cup of tea and dipping in a rich-tea or two, I did
another web search.
Eventually I found http://www.brookebondcollectables.co.uk/ which offered a database for sale.
I contacted the proprietor of the site,
Lee, asking for some screen shots and details of the database.
Unfortunately, Lee was unable to help me due to a few technical issues at the
time.
Since I couldn't 'look' at the database, I decided to hold back my pennies for
the time-being and contact Lee in a month-or-so.
Being a bit short of cash, I thought I might even have a go at writing a
database myself.
Just a small one. Something I can knock-up in a week-or-so.
That was over two years ago.
Since then this database has taken form.
I was so pleased with it, that I decided to make it available to other
collectors!
What can it do?
- as a reference tool to
view a scanned image of every UK Brooke Bond PG Tips
card from B01 to B55.
look up the back-of-card text of every UK Brooke Bond
PG Tips card from B01 to B55.
look up card set information such as the foreword in each of
the card set albums, or to check for card errors or variations.
search the back of any of the cards for specific
information.
- as an inventory tool to maintain a
list of cards and sets required or owned.
- as a tool to maintain a list of your
collections associated market value
- as a reporting tool to print off lists
of cards required and owned to take to collectors fairs etc.
What does it look like?
Although a fairly simple database it must be seen first-hand to
experience the many functions within the various screens.
Below are a few examples of the sort of things you might see when using the
database.
